xGW

An acronym for "x Gradient Warfare" or "x Grade Warfare."

The term is used to distinguish the theory of Gradient/Grade Warfare from a precursor theory of warfare called Generations of Modern Warfare (GMW).  Like GMW, xGW posits various different styles or modes of conflict, strategy, or sets of tactics -- each is one grade or gradient in the theory -- but unlike GMW does not insist upon a linear temporal emergence of these modes within our modern era.  Within xGW theory, all gradients can co-exist, and most xGW theorists insist that these gradients have always existed.

Generally speaking, there are 6 gradients delineated within the theory, 0 - 5, although some theorists have postulated a 7th or more while other theorists exclude the first, 0GW, from their theory.
